After earning a Masters of Art Therapy from The George Washington University in 2006, I worked with children and adolescents with a history of trauma and substance abuse on an inpatient psychiatric ward in a metropolitan city. My parents’ divorce impacted our family and was our first encounter with a counselor. I found counseling offered new insights in a safe space for healing. I can help others in healing through my training as a counselor.
As an artist, I experience creative blocks. Art therapy helps to open oneself to the creative process and unblock barriers to creativity. I lead 8-12-week Creativity Recovery Workshops that help artists identify and overcome blocks to creativity.
I experienced the loss of a friend to cancer in my 30’s. As I recall her strong presence and celebrated her life, at the time I needed support of friends and a counselor to process my grief. Before and since, I have experienced deaths of friends and family members and leaned into practices of grief from Grief Share. I co-facilitated Grief Share, http://www.griefshare.org, a 13-week support group for those who are grieving loss.
In the past, I have offered a memory care art group for adults diagnosed with Dementia. I have supported and counseled women who experienced Post-Partum Depression and Psychosis. I have offered art therapy to adolescents with special needs and learning disabilities, and at-risk youth. In my previous career as a special educator, I earned graduate credits of Special Education and taught in an elementary Special Education Classroom.
